Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Bands to join our Performing Arts faculty starting August 2026 for the 2026-27 academic year. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead our band program, providing artistic direction, mentorship, and musical inspiration to our talented students. This position requires a demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and a degree in music (instrumental conducting, preferred).

Responsibilities:

• Directing and conducting the
  • MSSU Lion Pride Marching Band (MWF, 2-4p),
  • Jazz Orchestra (TTR, 11-12:15P) and
  • Concert Band (TTR, 2:15-3:45p).
• Selecting appropriate repertoire and organizing performances in alignment with the department’s and the university's academic calendar.
• Planning and leading rehearsals, performances, and other band-related events:
  • Lion Pride Marching Band drills, performances at home games (c. 6), and parades (c. 4)
  • 2 Fall & 2 Spring semester Concert Band concerts (Taylor Auditorium)
  • 1 Fall & 1 Spring semester Jazz Orchestra concerts (Taylor Auditorium)
  • Spring Pep Band for MSSU Basketball games
• Teaching related classes commensurate with experience, such as Instrumental Conducting (even Fall semesters)
• Recruiting in area schools.
• Collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to enhance the overall musical experience.
• Providing mentorship and guidance to students, fostering their musical growth and development.
• Engaging with the local community through outreach initiatives and performances.

Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree - Instrumental Conducting (preferred), or a related field.
• Significant high school or college band directing experience.
• Strong conducting skills and a deep understanding of band repertoire.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse environment.
• Flexibility, adaptability, and commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment for students of all backgrounds.
